Chesapeake Partners to Advance RSG, First Company to Certify Two Basins

July 14, 2021

Chesapeake announced a partnership MiQ and Equitable Origin to certify production as responsibly sourced gas (RSG) across its Haynesville Shale and Marcellus Shale assets, making it the first company to certify production across two major shale basins. This new project demonstrates Chesapeake’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable production across its gas basins and support the company’s pledge to reduce methane intensity to 0.09% by 2025.

“Leading a responsible energy future is core to Chesapeake’s values, and this partnership marks another important step as we advance our focus on differentially lowering our methane and GHG intensity in pursuit of achieving our pledge to reach net zero direct emissions,” said Mike Wichterich, Chesapeake Board Chairman and Interim CEO.

Nonprofit MiQ is pioneering a market-based approach to rapidly reduce methane emissions across the natural gas sector. Its quantitative standard, the MiQ Standard, factors in methane intensity, company practices and methane detection to certify production as responsibly sourced.

This certification provides a verified approach to tracking Chesapeake’s commitment to reduce to our methane intensity, as well as support the company’s overall objective of achieving net zero direct GHG emissions by 2035.

Equitable Origin has a proven track record of certifying energy production based on a variety of ESG indicators. As a third party, it evaluates Chesapeake’s produced natural gas against five principles: corporate governance and ethics; social impacts, human rights and community engagement; Indigenous Peoples’ rights; occupational health and safety and fair labor standards; and environmental impacts, biodiversity and climate change.

We anticipate our Haynesville production to be certified RSG by the end of 2021 with Marcellus production to follow by the end of second quarter 2022.
